How to get more YouTube subscribers: a channel worksheet

Give the right viewers a clear reason to return. Improve the channel promise and packaging, then separate views, subscriptions and returning viewers in your review.

Supplied subscription conversion

Use attributed subscriptions only. If unavailable, leave the numerator empty.

Match the promise to the content

YouTube’s official discovery explanation centers viewer relevance and satisfaction. Use titles and thumbnails that accurately represent the video. A click that disappoints the viewer is not a complete outcome.

Original tutorial-channel example: “Pottery video 12” becomes “Fix a cracked mug handle: the repair that held.” A channel trailer could promise small-space pottery fixes, with a concrete demonstration and an invitation to the next lesson. These are proposals, not claimed tested improvements.

Keep denominators separate

Thumbnail impression CTR uses counted thumbnail impressions, not every video view. YouTube’s help notes that external embeds and notifications can be outside counted impressions. Returning viewers and subscriber totals also describe different groups.

Illustrative arithmetic: 20 attributed subscriptions from 2,000 comparable views = 1%. If your source provides only total subscriber change, attribution remains unknown. Do not label it subscriptions caused by that video.

Test, then revisit

Compare a baseline and follow-up window. Keep topic and format comparable; record concurrent changes. If subscription attribution is absent, use your measured outcome without guessing it. The worksheet on this page performs supplied-count arithmetic and saves your experiment.
